An ESPN motor sports reporter, a racing editor and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway PR director will  make up a distinguished panel when the sports division visits the speedway for its second annual sports  night out at the annual BEA conference next week.

After being the driving force behind last year’s outing to the Vegas  51s game, Ohio University’s Don Moore has outdone himself by arranging for ESPN’s Jamie Little,  Performance Racing Industry’s John Kilroy and the speedway’s Jeff Motley to speak with division members during their Tuesday night trip. 

Moore will moderate the session, entitled “Media in the Fast Lane: How New Technology Has Changed the Face of the Racing Business” (click link to see poster).

Some details are still being worked out for the 6:30 gathering.  There’s still a possibility of bus transport to the site (according to Don as of April 6), but if that falls through, we should be able to find enough vehicles. We’re also still waiting to hear about a possible reception, but with the panel and facility tour lined up, there will still be plent of reason to clear space on your agenda Tuesday evening.

Keep your eyes and ears open at the conference — especially at the division business meeting Tuesday at 10:45 a.m.  (see schedule on the post below this one). As we firm up more details, we’ll get them posted and announced.

BEA Executive Director Heather Birks also shared some scheduling info with division officers in August and told us this week that this info, while not yet completely set, is firm enough to pass on for planning purposes:

The BEA Exhibit Hall will be open Monday April 11 & Tuesday April 12.  NAB sessions & exhibits open Monday April 11 and run through Thursday April 14.  All BEA activities will be at the Hilton this year.

This year’s spotlight is “BEA:HD” but the convention is open to all programming ideas. Mike met with most of the divisions during the 2010 convention, and he also sent this narrative to divisions recently to share his thoughts on ways to interpret the spotlight.

CONVENTION SPOTLIGHT

Let your creative juices flow for this year’s spotlight…..BEA:HD. Technological transformations have major implications for media professionals, audiences, educators, and students. HD has become a metaphor for the rapidly changing media landscape. The HD paradigm encourages critical examination of all aspects of media education-technology, content, research, pedagogy. HD offers multiple interpretations-from high definition to hyper-dynamic-and we encourage BEA members to creatively interpret BEA:HD.

I bought the tickets for the 51s game today.  The seats are field boxes on the first base side.  They are $14 per person.  I will try to break away mid-day Wednesday to pick them up.  I’ll hand them out at the LVCC Sports Sessions Wednesday afternoon to anyone wishing them in advance.  I’ll also try to have maps available (From the LVCC to Cashman Field).

Anyone wishing to car pool (or taxi) together should be outside in front of the Las Vegas Convention Center entrance (near the NAB Store & cafeteria) no later than 5:30pm.  If you want to be part of the media tour at Cashman Field we need to be in the Press Box at 6pm.

The Grand Concourse is the portion of the convention center between the North Hall and the Central Hall.  It’s the area where the NAB Store, one of the two convention center Starbucks, and Banners Restaurant are found.

The current plan is that whoever’s driving will be pulling up on Silver Drive in front of the Grand Concourse and that we’ll probably have to make a couple of runs to the ballpark for our 6:15 tour of the 51s media facilities.  Watch this space and our Twitter account (http://www.twitter.com/bea_sports) for updates or more details.
